Pregnancy-Safe Skincare: What to Avoid (And What Actually Helps)
Somewhere between the first scan and the first kick, most women start looking a little more closely at what is in the products on their bathroom shelf.
It is a good instinct. Pregnancy changes what your skin absorbs and a handful of common skincare ingredients are best avoided while you are expecting.
But here is the reassuring part. The list of ingredients worth genuinely worrying about is short. Most of what is already in your routine is perfectly fine, and pregnancy-safe skincare is not about starting again from scratch. It is about knowing what to check for, so you can get on with the magical business of growing a person.
This is your clear, no-panic guide.
The ingredients worth checking for
Your skin is your body's biggest organ and what you put on it can make its way into your bloodstream. During pregnancy, a small number of ingredients are best avoided because of how they interact with a developing baby.
Retinoids (retinol, retinoic acid, retinaldehyde). Found in a lot of anti-ageing and acne products. Vitamin A derivatives are one of the ingredients most guidelines, NHS included, recommend avoiding during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
Hydroquinone. A skin-brightening ingredient used for pigmentation. It is absorbed more readily than most other actives, so it is generally best left for after baby arrives.
High-strength salicylic acid. Common in acne treatments and peels. Low concentrations in a wash-off cleanser are considered low-risk, but stronger, leave-on formulas and in-clinic peels are worth avoiding.
Concentrated essential oils. A few, like clary sage and rosemary in high doses, are worth being mindful of, particularly in the first trimester. This does not mean all natural or essential-oil-based products are off-limits. It is about concentration and context, which is exactly why we formulate ours the way we do.
Certain chemical UV filters. Ingredients like oxybenzone are best swapped for a mineral sunscreen (think zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) during pregnancy.
None of this means panicking over every label. It means knowing the handful of ingredients worth checking for and choosing brands that have already done that thinking for you.

When should you start caring for your bump?
Earlier than most people expect.
The best time to start pregnancy-safe stretch mark care is in the first trimester, before your bump has properly appeared. Keeping skin hydrated and supported from the start means it is better prepared for the stretching that picks up pace in the second trimester.
Think of it less as a treatment and more as a daily habit. A couple of minutes, morning or night, that becomes part of how you look after yourself for the next nine months.
Our And Stretch... Stretch Mark Cream and Smooth Moves Stretch Mark Oil were both built for exactly this. And Stretch… is packed with shea and cupuacu butter to help keep skin supple as it stretches. Smooth Moves is built around argan, sweet almond and apricot kernel oil, and works well massaged in before the cream to help lock everything in.
Both are pregnancy-safe from day one, so there is no ingredient-checking required. We have already done it.
And after birth
Pregnancy safe skincare does not stop at pregnancy. The fourth trimester asks just as much of your skin, sometimes more.
Keep using And Stretch... Stretch Mark Cream and Smooth Moves Stretch Mark Oil after birth. Regular use in the weeks and months that follow supports your skin as it finds its way back, working with the natural process of your bump settling rather than against it.
Self-care in those early days can feel like the first thing to slip. A short, familiar routine, one you already trust, is an easy way to hold on to a few minutes that are entirely yours.
Why pregnancy-safe actually means something here
Every pregnancy product we make is formulated to be safe throughout pregnancy, not adapted afterwards.
Here is what that looks like in practice:
-
No parabens, SLS or petrochemicals
-
Made in the UK
-
Cruelty-free and vegan
-
Female-founded, and formulated by a female-strong team
It is why we are stocked at M&S, Boots and Next and why we can say we have built this range with pregnant skin in mind, not around it.
We are female founders, but mothers first. Bloom and Blossom began because we could not find pregnancy safe body care that felt like it understood what our bodies were actually going through. So we made it ourselves and that is still who we are formulating for today.

Trialled by the ones who know
We did not just want to tell mums our products are pregnancy-safe. We wanted the people who see pregnant skin every single day to tell us too.
We put our Skin to Skin Bump to Baby Massage Oil in front of 40 pregnant midwives, doctors and health visitors and asked them to trial it and give us their honest verdict.
100% of the pregnant healthcare professionals surveyed said they would recommend it.
Skin to Skin is designed to go from bump to baby, with batana oil, squalane and arnica to hydrate and condition skin that is stretching, healing or brand new. It is the product we are proudest to have put in front of the professionals who know pregnant skin best.
