Celebrating Roald Dahl Day 2019

Sleep Well and Be Brave - Matilda

This year, for Roald Dahl Day, our friends at the Road Dahl Story Company are celebrating the magical Matilda and the bravery that she inspires. With Matilda being one of our favourite characters too, we wanted to join the celebrations so have asked the B&B team as well as the Bloom and Blossom Juniors what makes them brave, who they think is the bravest person and what amazing acts of bravery they have been witness to.

From the team

"The bravest person I know is my mum who is battling a serious illness. Head held high, smile on her face, never a moan or a self pitying moment and engaging all NHS staff from the consultants to the cleaners with dignity and respect – my mum is an inspiration and I wish I was as brave as her." - Christina

"My mummy will always be the bravest person I have ever known – she showed so much courage as she battled her cancer, facing such adversity and so many challenges. Being brave is a quality I talk a lot about with my children, and a quality that we nurture." - Julia

"My 2.5 yr old telling me her recent attitude came “from her mouth”. That was a brave move indeed." - Charlotte

"At the risk of sounding like a creep, I think our beloved founders, Julia & Christina, deserve some recognition for their bravery. Running your own business is no mean feat. There are challenges most days, some big, some small; times when they can clang the office gong in triumph, times when sacrifices have to be made but, through it all, these two ladies are quietly smashing it. I'd say they are exceedingly brave...or mad..." - Hannah

"My mum, who, throughout her long illness showed the utmost bravery almost on a daily basis taking whatever was thrown at her in her stride, with a smile on her face and an unwavering determination to get better." - Katie

"My son Jamie aged 4 going windsurfing for the first time at the kids club, "I was a bit scared but it was so much fun." - Elena

"I need to be (act) very brave every time a spider is in our house as my partner is petrified of them." - Colm

"I felt I was brave starting at Bloom and Blossom and being the only vegetarian, especially when the majority of office chats focus on food with many main dishes featuring meat. At least we're on level ground when it comes to discussing halloumi dishes!" - Ricky

From the Bloom and Blossom Juniors

"Greta Thunberg is really brave, she recently travelled to New York on a boat so she didn’t use a plane's petrol and damage the air, and she stands up for what she believes in and tells everyone how important it is to look after our planet." - Baxter, aged 9

"My friend who was ill was so brave going to hospital, having an operation and feeling sick a lot – he is the bravest person I know." - Clemence, aged 6

"My daddy is brave, he looks after us and everyone at his job." - Elodie, aged 4

"The bravest person I know is Malala Yousafzai because she stood up against bullies for girls to go to school. Malala wrote a book called The Magic Pencil and it is my favourite book." - Seraphina, aged 7

"I am brave because I didn’t cry when I went to big school." - Flora, aged 4
