Manufacturing a product is a true rollercoaster and an exciting one at that. From the very outset we have been involved in every layer of our manufacture of Bloom and Blossom. We are so proud to be Made in Great Britain and as a result we have very close relationships with our manufacturers and spend a lot of time at their factories, in their labs and in the thick of it – hair nets are a staple in our wardrobes now.
So once the phizz-whizzing idea of the BFG collection was born we spent many hours with our manufacturers planning everything from the tube heights, colour of lids, seal sizing, labels, cartons, stickers, bookmarks and of course the most important part of actual product formulations. Every step takes time, consideration and patience. All our products are paediatrician and dermatologist approved, safe for eczema prone and sensitive skin and safe from newborn so to ensure we are bringing such high quality products to market months of testing is implemented.
Working so closely with the Roald Dahl Story Company has been an incredible part of this journey and having access to all the Quentin Blake images and Roald Dahl assets has made our final products appealing to children and parents alike. So once we had the final thumbs up on The BFG designs we had so much of the practical stuff to consider. Whenever we come up with a concept, a product idea, a packaging suggestion, we need to always be thinking about the customer – what are they looking for, what is easy to use (especially when you have your hands full in the bath, children running riot), what will the children love, what images do they want to see, what colours appeal to them. We are so lucky to have 5 children between us who are true brand ambassadors and are so integral to every decision we make. They want to see fun images, they love poppy colours, they love activities and they want personalisation. So during this journey we considered all their feedback, comments and desires and created products for them.
Knowing how much our children love to be involved in products we ensured our Dream Catcher’s Pillow Spray carton had the extra whoppsy whiffling activities inside, competitions to enter, word searches to fill in, gobblefunk to create and to support of Bath, Book & Bedtime purpose we added a book mark to the carton, with 4 to collect. Reading before bedtime is so important and an integral part of a child’s bedtime routine, and no body wants to lose your page in a book so note our bookmark saviour. And because our children were quite literally crying out for their own pillow spray, to sit by their bed, with their name on it – we added in a strip of stickers to help each child personalise their bottle - hoping to silence the ‘that one is mine!!’ shrieking at the end of the day
When it came to manufacturing the cartons we were there on the pass, watching the Willy Wonka factory sized printers spitting out our BFG carton, and stickers coming off rolls at a rate of knots. We then spent time balancing the colours to brightened and soften wherever necessary and off they would go for final printing.
The day we stood in our fashion staple hair net, on the pass at our manufacturers, trying to pack off the very first Wispy Misty Bubble Baths will be a date to remember. They were coming off the machine so fast, we were pretty useless and speed was not on our side and the team had to slow down production so there wasn’t a overload……. Footage of us packing that stock off is something we will always treasure – and we have been there and will continue to be there for every new product that comes off the line.
Working with good manufacturers is integral to the growth of any business and they need to believe in your brand as much as you do. Making all our products in Great Britain means we can be fully submerged in this process and we can ensure our promise of quality, natural, honest and worry free products are what we bring to our customers. As a family business, who creates skincare for the whole family, we would not have it any other way.
